MHS routs Packers

Alex Yanosko gave the Minot High School football team a 14-0 lead in the first quarter of Friday’s season opener, but left his team with a little uncertainty.

The Magicians held on for a 27-0 win over West Fargo in a lightning-delayed game, but the first-team all-state quarterback limped off the field after throwing an interception in the second quarter.

Sophomore backup Ben Bolinske filled in ably for the Magicians, connecting on a variety of routes and scoring his first varsity career touchdown on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The MHS defense posted an impressive shutout, stifling nearly everything the Packers tried.

Senior linebacker Kolton Larson recorded his first sack and recovered a fumble after missing the majority of his junior season with a foot injury. Detroit transfer and senior defensive end Kolton Stevens made his first impact with a crushing hit on West Fargo senior quarterback Scott Cameron. MHS senior cornerback Kimani Benjamin nearly snagged an interception on the play.

Yanosko started the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run to cap a nine-play, 41-yard drive on the Magicians’ first possession. He completed his first three passes on the opening drive, including a 22-yard strike to senior tight end Jacob Holmen on a 3rd-and-17.

Yanosko completely fooled the Packers with a fake handoff that turned into 47-yard touchdown run up the middle of the field on the next possession.

The half turned sloppy after that possession. Yanosko threw an interception to West Fargo junior safety Isaiah Helland-Davis. The ball was returned 21 yards to the MHS 39-yard line and Yanosko limped off the field, took his helmet off and was shut down for the evening.

Two plays later, the Packers squandered good territory with a fumble by junior running back Samuel Olson. Bolinske went three-and-out on his first varsity series and West Fargo blocked his punt attempt to regain possession at the MHS 13-yard line.

The MHS defense stuffed Olson on fourth-and-3 at the 6-yard line to cap a fine first half.

Bolinske finished the game 6-of-10 for 86 yards passing and rushed for 25 yards. Senior running back Brady Lampert led all rushers with 77 yards on his 16 carries.

Ben Love connected on field goals of 29 and 42 yards to round out the MHS scoring.
