Lois was born to Russell V. and Amelia (Morin) McNary in Buford, on May 22, 1929. She attended school in Buford until the family moved to Williston, where she continued her education.

She married Norman L. Sande on Dec. 6, 1947, in Sidney, Mont. They made their home in Williston except for a short time spent in San Diego, Calif., where Norman was stationed with the Navy.
