Ellen A. Krumwiede, 100, Velva, formerly of Voltaire, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, in a Velva nursing home.
Ellen Anna Roberts was born July 17, 1913, the daughter of James and Adelaide (Halpin) Roberts at Hurd in Bottineau County. She grew up on a farm in the Eckman area and attended country schools. She graduated from high school at the Notre Dame Academy at Willow City. She later attended Minot State University.
Ellen married William O. Krumwiede on Oct. 12, 1940, in Bottineau. They began farming and raising cattle near Voltaire after William returned from service in the Navy in October 1945. They retired from farming in 1981. William and Ellen lived on the farm for 59 years and in 2004 they moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Minot. William died April 13, 2007. Ellen entered ManorCare Nursing Home in October 2009 and moved to the Semmen Assisted Living Home on March 31, 2010. She entered the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva on Nov. 1, 2012.
Ellen was a member of the VFW Auxiliary of Karlsruhe and the American Legion Auxiliary of Velva, the Voltaire Homemakers Club for nearly 40 years and active with the Voltaire PTA. She was also a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Velva and the Christian Mothers, St. Monica’s Guild. Ellen enjoyed stamp collecting, dancing, oil painting, writing letters, keeping scrapbooks, a daily journal of activities, playing cards, sewing quilts, Word Search and reading.
Ellen is survived by her loving family: three sons, Joseph Krumwiede, of Crary, William D. (Jackie) Krumwiede, Voltaire, and James Krumwiede, Minot; two daughters, Jean Krumwiede, Minot, and Mary Ann (Dean) Peterschick, Surrey; six grandchildren, Jessica Weigel, Devils Lake, Tim (Denise) Krumwiede, Velva, William (Julie) Krumwiede, West Fargo, Lisa (Calvin) Frank, Minot, Steve (Rachael) Hundley, South St. Paul, Minn., and Michael Hundley, Bismarck; 16 great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Madison, Allan and Mary Weigel, Sonja Kessler, Danya (Robby) Brown, Kaia (Michael) Zietz, Samantha and William Krumwiede, Justice, Trevon and Jada McClanahan, Brooklyn Frank, Ava and Eleanor Hundley, Isabella Dvorak; twin great-great-grandsons, Aiden and Caleb Brown; two great-great-grandchildren, Cadence and Brayden Zietz; sister-in-law, Irene Krumwiede: and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Ellen was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, William; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Krumwiede; brothers, Clarence, James and Cecil Roberts; sisters, Verna Hettinger and Isabelle Baggenstoss.
Funeral: Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Visitation: Monday, from 5 to 7 p.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Vigil Prayer Service: Monday, at 7 p.m., in St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.
Burial: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.
Memorials may be given to the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, or the Souris Valley Care Center, both of Velva.
