Christian Bachmeier

Christian Bachmeier, 89, Karlsruhe, formerly of Velva, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Brentmoor Assisted Living in Minot.

Christian Bachmeier was born Feb. 18, 1924, the son of Peter and Christine (Marquart) Bachmeier, on his parents’ farm near Orrin. He was raised on his parents’ farm and educated at Rosebush country school near his home.

Christian was drafted into the Army on Sept. 23, 1944. He proudly served his country during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart and other medals. He was honorably discharged Nov. 20, 1946.

Chris married Brigitha Ziegler on Sept. 29, 1947, in Drake. They made their home on a ranch east of N.D. Highway 14 for a few years. They later also resided in Surrey and Minot; Post Falls, Idaho; and in Velva. Chris and Brigitha raised five children together. Brigitha passed away in January 1988.

Chris married Marian “Mary” (Bohl) Boehm on Dec. 14, 1990, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Karlsruhe. They made their home in Karlsruhe, where they worked for many years, and enjoyed their lives and families. Mary passed away Aug. 3, 2005.

Chris was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Karlsruhe, the Velva American Legion, the Karlsruhe American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge and the Elks Lodge.

Throughout his life, Chris worked in a variety of settings. He was employed by the Burlington Northern Railway and a silver mine in Idaho. He was a custodian, concrete pourer and carpenter. Chris owned and operated a custom feed grinding company. He also worked for various farmers in the Velva area. Most recently, Chris served as groundskeeper for the City of Karlsruhe.

Chris loved to drive his car to see his family. He especially enjoyed road trips across the country. He liked working and keeping himself busy. Chris enjoyed being outdoors, tinkering in his garage, dancing, and listening to polka music. Chris loved to watch “The Three Stooges” and he would laugh until tears came to his eyes. Chris was humble when asked about his military service, but was happy to share his history with his grandchildren. He loved playing cards with family, especially playing pinochle with his children and grandchildren. Chris enjoyed visiting at family gatherings and eating homemade German food.

Surviving family includes: children, Mary Lou Bachmeier, Minot, Carl (Rita) Bachmeier, Minneapolis, Allen (Deb) Bachmeier, Velva, Melvin (Judi) Bachmeier, Minot; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lawrence (Karen) Bachmeier, Granville, and Peter (Betty) Bachmeier, Rugby; sisters, Marcella Bachmeier, Burlington, Caroline Schmaltz, Velva, Phyllis Lesmister and Cecilia Carrasquilla, both Renton, Wash., and Christine (LeRoy) Haman, Devils Lake; extended family, Kenneth (Tamra) Boehm, Minneapolis, Allen (Donna) Boehm, Pick City, Gary (Mary) Boehm, Minot, David (Elaine) Boehm, Karlsruhe, Ernie Boehm, Granville, Lynn Boehm, Minot, Vernon (Karla) Boehm, Beulah, Daniel (Teresa) Boehm, Karlsruhe; numerous stepgrandchildren, and stepgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Brigitha; wife, Marian; daughter, LaDonna Bachmeier; infant brother, Anton; brothers, Matt and Joseph Bachmeier; and sister, Theresa Jones.

Funeral: Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Interment: Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Velva.

Visitation: Sunday, Sept. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m., at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva.

Vigil prayer service: Sunday, 5 p.m., at the church.
