Enough to go around
Nine goals. Seven different players.
The outcome of Saturday’s West Region boys soccer match between Minot High and Jamestown was never in doubt. The Magicians won 9-0 over an overmatched team – which started five freshmen – and shared the ball as well as they have this year.
Sophomore forward Matt Oswalt and junior forward Ekow Annan scored two goals apiece and joined five other scorers at Optimist Soccer Complex.
“Fantastic,” MHS coach Cody Saunders said. “It’s what it’s about. It’s a team game. It’s nice to see all that effort rewarded with a goal (for each scorer).”
The Magicians (7-3-4 overall, 4-2-3 region) conclude the regular season with a rematch on Senior Night against St. Mary’s at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The team will sport pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. MHS plays either Jamestown (1-12-1, 1-8-0) or Mandan on Friday in a state-qualifier.
Oswalt started Saturday’s scoring with a header in the eighth minute. Senior forward Ryan Crabtree delivered one of his many well-placed corner kicks on the play to notch the first of a team-high three assists.
“We always want to keep possession, so we always try to find different players and whoever has the best opportunity to score,” Crabtree said. “We don’t look to go to one person only because everyone on the team can score and that’s a good thing.”
Jamestown’s defense tightly bottled MHS for the next seven minutes before junior Teegan Olson scored in the 15th minute to spark a 10-minute span of three MHS goals. Five different players scored the five first-half goals. Senior Tyler Crabtree scored with 11 seconds left in the half.
MHS exhibited strong understanding of when to play attacking balls through the air or on the ground.
“We’re getting used to each other and how we should play and what our runs are like,” Oswalt said. “We don’t just play it over top anymore. We look for the holes, since we have to play against better teams and that’s how they play.”
Senior defender Ben Love scored the highlight goal of the second half with a diving header off a Ryan Crabtree corner kick.
Annan scored with 12 second remaining to tie St. Mary’s 1-1 in a match earlier this season in Bismarck. The Magicians can finish third in the West with a win over the Saints.
