The Voice of Democracy Contest is open to students in grades 9-12 who are in a public, private or parochial high school or home schooled. The contest requires students to record a 3- to 5-minute speech on a cassette tape or CD and neatly typed. This year’s (2013-14) theme is “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.” Entries are judged by the local VFW Post before advancing the first-place winner to the district and state levels. All state winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. A total of $152,000 is awarded to national finalists. First place is a $30,000 college scholarship, second place $16,000, third place $10,000, fourth place through 32nd-place awards range from $7,000 to $1,500, with all remaining winners receiving $1,000.
