Magicians ousted at state tennis tournament
FARGO – The Minot High School boys tennis team lost its first two matches and was eliminated from the team state tournament on Thursday.
Grand Forks Red River, the 15-time defending state champion, crushed the Magicians 5-0 before Mandan topped Minot 4-1 in an elimination match.
The Magicians won just four games against Red River.
“I thought we could’ve made them work a little more, but they’ve won nearly 200 straight matches for a reason,” MHS coach Scott DeLorme said in a press release.
The second matchup was more competitive, though Mandan won all four of its matches in straight sets.
Minot junior Dustin Foster lost a tight match at No. 1 to Mandan’s Erik Porter, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
Cody Reynolds and Josh Thompson paired for the Magicians’ lone win of the day at No. 2 doubles, defeating Mandan’s Tate Russell and Tyler Tweter 6-1, 6-3.
“We had a lineup out there we thought we could win with, but things didn’t go our way,” DeLorme said. “Dustin Foster lost a tough two-setter to Erik Porter, who he beat earlier this year. Cody Reynolds and Josh Thompson got our lone win at two doubles and I was very proud of their effort. Cody has played good for us all year and Josh was put into the lineup this weekend for the first time all year and they played very well together.”
The East Region was dominant on day one of the tournament, sending all four of its teams to the semifinals. Red River faces West Fargo in the title match at 9 a.m. today.
The individual portion of the tournament starts at 1 p.m. Foster and seniors Isaac Massey and Grayson Bahl will represent MHS in the singles draw. Junior Drew Thomas and sophomore Ty Nygaard will play together in the doubles bracket.
