Constance ‘Connie’ Backes
Constance “Connie” Backes, 74, Minot, formerly of Glenburn, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in a Minot hospital.
Connie was born March 5, 1939, in Minot, the daughter of Lawrence and Clarice (Olson) Schimmelpfennig. She was raised on a farm west of Ruthville and attended country school until attending Glenburn High School, graduating from there in 1957.
Connie married Roger Backes on Aug. 19, 1957, in Glenburn. They lived in Glenburn and they operated Roger’s Market in Glenburn, until 1991 when they moved to Minot. Connie then worked for Walmart for 10 years. In her retirement, she volunteered for various places and was a member of various coffee groups.
Her family was her life. She lived for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Connie was a member of St. Philomena’s Catholic Church, Glenburn, and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Connie is survived by: her husband, Roger, Minot; children, Brian (Joan) Backes, Bismarck, Carla (Rick) Schilken, Minot, Blair Backes, Minot, and Bryce Backes, Minot; grandchildren, Chris (Erika) Schilken, Cameron Schilken, Danielle Schilken, Brittany (Dustin) Offerdahl, Brooks Backes and Brenden Backes; great-grandchildren, Izabella, Mack, Knox and Case Schilken; brother, Larry (Ilene) Schimmelpfennig, Minot; sister, Clara Jeanne (Lee) Vigstol, Minot; brothers-in-law, Roger Dozark, Jim Kosse, Orlin (Millie) Backes; sister-in-law, Estelle Vatter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by: her parents and two sisters, Darlene Dozark and Cyndi Kosse.
Mass of Christian Burial: will be on Monday, Oct. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Burial: St. Philomena’s Catholic Cemetery, Glenburn, on Monday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m.
Vigil Prayer Service: Sunday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday, Oct. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Bishop Ryan Catholic School or the Minot State Beaver Boosters, both Minot.
