MOHALLOlaf Alvin Locken, 95, Mohall, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at a Mohall nursing home.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1917, to Norwegian immigrants, Hans and Anna (Silseth) Locken, who homesteaded in Hamlet Township, rural Mohall. He attended Hamlet School through the eighth grade, and then went to work on his family’s farm because his older brother had joined the military.
On Oct. 18, 1945, Olaf married Hazel Erickson, in Mohall. They had three children: Brenda, Susie, and Wade. Hazel passed away in May of 1981.
At approximately age 20, he sold all of his possessions to buy his first 160 acres of farm land. He continued to actively farm and ranch until the age of 92. Even after he entered the nursing home in January 2012, he was still involved in farming with his son, Wade.
Olaf was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, where he served on the church council and also on the Hamlet Township Board.
Family: children, Brenda Cummins, Las Vegas, Susan (Richard) Brudvik, Fargo, and Wade (Bonnie) Locken, Mohall; four grandchildren, Erin Brudvik, Minneapolis, Eric Cummins (fiancee, Kari Szewczyk), Kansas City, Mo., Caitlin (Mattew) Hess, Las Vegas, and Rachel (Tyler) Carlson, Fargo; two stepgrandchildren, Jeremy (Katie) Zerr, Boise, Idaho, and Tahnee (Greg) Miller, Fargo; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Corinne and Audrey Zerr; and a large extended family.
Olaf was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Hannah Locken, Mabel Rue, Alpha Engebretson and Henry Locken.
Funeral: Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.
Burial: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.
Visitation: Monday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 7 p.m., at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.
