Ramstad lends a helping hand to other schools
Eighth-graders in Patty Hildenbrand’s advanced English class at Erik Ramstad Middle School are coordinating and sponsoring a charity dodgeball tournament that will be held at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Minot Municipal Auditorium, located at 424-3rd Ave. SW in Minot.
“Our students were flooded and they want to do something for the students who were flooded in Colorado,” said Hildenbrand, an English teacher at the middle school.
Hildenbrand said proceeds from the tournament will go to victims of recent flooding in Colorado. Students in the English class have identified a school in Colorado they would like to help.
The Ramstad school was destroyed during the Souris River Flood of 2011 and classes have been held since the fall of 2011 at the Minot Municipal Auditorium.
“Since we’re at the auditorium, they all understand the consequences of losing their school,” said Hildenbrand.
Following the Souris River flood, Ramstad students received donations from all over the country and some unexpected gifts, including ceiling tiles that had been decorated by students at another school. The students in Hildenbrand’s classes are trying to pass along the gifts.
Students in another class Hildenbrand teaches are organizing a benefit bake sale and will donate proceeds of “hat day,” to flood relief efforts. On “hat day,” kids pay to wear a hat during part of the school day.
“They’re a pretty good group of kids and they’re going to have fun doing it,” said Hildenbrand.
For the dodgeball tournament, teams of six or more are accepted and people of all ages are welcome. Team registration is $2 for students and $5 for adults. There will be a $1 admission charge for fans. Businesses, organizations or individuals can sponsor a team as an option.
