Mildred Latimer

Mildred Harriet Latimer, 91, Velva, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at a Minot hospital.

Mildred was born July 27, 1922, in York, the daughter of Howard and Myrtle (Grahm) Gunderson. The family moved to a farm near Shevlin, Minn., where Mildred attended first grade, and later moved to Egeland, where Mildred continued her education. She was an honor student and involved with band and many other activities before graduating in 1940.

Mildred attended Minot State Teachers College and in 1942 earned her standard teaching certificate. She taught school in Voltaire for two years, where she met and married Robert E. Latimer on Feb. 12, 1943.

She worked at the Voltaire Post Office as an assistant postmistress and later as a leave replacement for many years. Mildred and Robert had one daughter, Roberta Jean, who was born March 4, 1960. The couple farmed the family farmstead until Robert’s retirement in the 1980s. After Robert’s death in 1994, Mildred continued to live in Voltaire until moving to Valley View Manor in Velva three years ago, where she enjoyed the company of her fellow residents and the staff.

Mildred was a member of the Velva United Methodist Church, Voltaire Homemakers and the Rebekah Lodge.

She was a kind, caring lady who always reminded her family she loved them and was praying for them. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, cooking and baking as well as entertaining family and friends.

Mildred is survived by: her daughter, Roberta (Craig) Martinson, and granddaughter, Ingrid Hannah, all of Central City, Iowa; sister, Jacqueline Smeltzer, Cando; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; parents; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral service: Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Velva United Methodist Church, Velva.

Visitation: Today, Oct. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.

Burial: Velva Community Cemetery, Velva.
