Virginia-Lee Bryans

Virginia Bryans, 91, Donnybrook, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, in her home.

Virginia was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Ivanhoe Township to Henry J. and Edna L. (Tewell) Steinberger. She grew up in Whiteash Township and graduated from Carpio High School. After graduation, she got her nursing training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Minot. She enlisted in the Navy during World War II. She was stationed at the receiving hospital in Seattle and mustered out of the Navy at the Presidio in San Francisco, Calif. She returned home after the war and enrolled at Marquette University, receiving her degree in nursing education. She then worked at the Murdale TB Sanatorium outside of Chicago, leaving there to become a surgical nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She was recalled into the Navy in 1951 to serve in the Korean Conflict.

She married Edward Bryans on March 17, 1951, and reported for duty at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. She was discharged from the Navy later that year and then lived as a farmwife in Plain Township, Renville County, and taught home nursing through the Red Cross.

She was a member of and served on the boards of several organizations including the Carpio Public School, the North Central Human Service Center, Dakota Oils, Christian Mothers-St. Mary’s Circle, St. Anthony Catholic Church, Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), Taube Museum of Art, the Mouse River Loop Genealogical Society, and the Clarence McCormick American Legion Post #195 of Donnybrook.

She and Edward retired off the farm in 1981, and moved to Donnybrook, enjoying travel, community involvement and genealogical research.

She is survived by: their children, Laura Lee (Robert) Rog, Antelope, Calif., Victor (Gail) Bryans, West Fargo, and Ann Bryans, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Natalie (Ben) Rog-Wilhelm, Jeanette Rog and Victor Edward III “Ted” Bryans; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, Jack and Phillip; son, David; and husband, Edward.

Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Donnybrook.

Interment: St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Donnybrook.

Visitation: Monday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.

Vigil Prayer Service: Monday, at 9:30 a.m., at the church.
