MSU hockey team pulls away from Colorado State

The second-ranked Minot State University men’s club hockey team scored five unanswered goals in the first half of the third period to pull away from No. 20 Colorado State on Friday at Maysa Arena.

Jeremy Johnson recorded a hat trick as the Beavers won 9-4.

“We really had a great third period,” MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. “We continued to make mistakes in the first two periods and hopefully corrected them in the third.”

Brett Nespor added two goals for the Beavers (7-0), who received 34 saves from senior goaltender Wyatt Waselenchuk.

The teams play again at 5 p.m. today.

Tauros drop seventh straight

BISMARCK – The Minot Minotauros’ losing streak stretched to seven games following a 3-1 loss against the Bismarck Bobcats on Friday at the VFW Sports Center.

The Bobcats (9-3) scored the game’s first three goals in the first 25 minutes, 54 seconds and outshot the Tauros 34-18. Leading 1-0, Bismarck’s Huba Sekesi and Cullen Willox tallied goals 57 seconds apart in the second period for a 3-0 advantage.

Minot forward Jack Forbort scored the Tauros’ lone goal with 9:39 remaining in the second period. Forward Tyler Shipstad and defenseman Jon Lizotte were credited with assists.

Minot goaltender Merrick Madsen finished with 31 saves.

The Tauros (2-9-2) host Bismarck at 8:05 tonight.

Velva-Killdeer playoff football game moved

Due to poor field conditions, today’s Class A playoff football game between Velva (5-3) and Killdeer (7-1) has been moved to the Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. Mountain time.
