Gerald Lawson

Gerald Lawson, 82, Donnybrook, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

Gerald LaVern Lawson was born Nov. 15, 1930, the son of Fillmore and Orpha (Ennis) Lawson, near Aurelia. He was raised and educated in Donnybrook, graduating from Donnybrook High School in 1948.

Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 17, 1952, at Fargo. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and served with the 7th Army Division, 17th Infantry Regiment, which was located on the 38th Parallel among the noted battle sites such as Baldy, Old Baldy, Pork Chop Hill, Jane Russell and 200. Most of his time was spent on Hill 347. He was wounded on a counterattack on Hill 200 on the night of July 5, 1953. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with two battle stars, and the United Nations Service Medal. He was honorably discharged Nov. 12, 1953.

Gerald married Ethel M. Helmers June 3, 1952, in Tolley. They made their home in Coulee where he managed the grain elevator until 1968. He then began his career as a rural mail carrier. He retired in the mid-1990s.

He was a member of Donnybrook United Methodist Church, the Donnybrook Clarence McCormack American Legion Post #195, the Donnybrook Fire Department. He was inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.

He enjoyed gardening. He loved watching sports, especially his children and grandchildren’s games. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

Surviving family includes: wife of 61 years, Ethel, Minot; children, Tom (Gayle) Lawson, Donnybrook, Don Lawson, Killdeer, Sandra (Ron) Michel, Donnybrook, Joel (Lori) Lawson, Minot; 10 grandchildren, Cory Lawson and Kristen Theobald, Alicia Meidinger and Jason Lawson, Ryan, Tory and Brady Michel, and Tia Durward, Lora St. Croix and JorDan Lawson; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Lawson, Bismarck, Roger (Gaynell) Lawson, Turtle Lake, and Dixon Lawson, Donnybrook; sister-in-law, LaVern Lawson, Minot; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Jerome Lawson.

Funeral: Thursday, Nov. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot.

Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Visitation: Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
