LANSFORD Michael James Hassan, 61, Lansford, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at his home.
Big Mike was born March 12, 2013, in Albany, N.Y., to Louis and Constance (Faulkner) Hassan. He was raised in New Lebanon and graduated from New Lebanon High School in 1970. Mike and Carol Shatney were married Nov. 17, 1973, in Canaan, N.Y.
Mike served two enlistments in the U.S. Air Force. He served from August 1972 to June 1980, and from November 1982 to January 1995. He was a master sergeant and served as a Corrosion Control Supervisor and Aircraft Structural Maintenance Craftsman.
Following his honorable discharge, he leased the Lansford Cafe for three years. He bought the bar in Maxbass in 1998 and operated it as Big Mike’s Bar and Steakhouse. He retired in December 2012.
Mike was a member of the George T. Taylor American Legion Post #52, Mohall, the Nodak Speedway Club and the Maxbass Fire Department and served as the sexton of Graceland Cemetery, Maxbass. He enjoyed golfing, playing poker and card games, racing at the Nodak Speedway and watching poker games on TV.
Family: wife, Carol Hassan, Lansford; son, Chad (Farrah Kersten) Hassan, Mohall; stepmother, Harriet Hassan, East Chatham, N.Y.; five sisters and three brothers; mother-in-law, Joan Shatney, East Chatham, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, Barry (Donna) Shatney, Nassau, N.Y., and Iliff (Wendy) Shatney, East Chatham, N.Y.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; a sister; father-in-law; and a brother-in-law, Larry.
Memorial Service: Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Trinity United Church, Lansford.
Friends may sign the guestbook two hours prior to the service at the church.
Memorials: Memorials preferred to an organization of the donor’s choice.
