Support Freezin’ for a Reason

Members of the Minot State University Student Social Work Organization are at it again.

The group will hold its annual Freezin’ for a Reason event Saturday, where they will collect food items and raise money and awareness of the growing needs of those who are homeless. The event will be held in the Town and Country Center parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. The group will collect monetary donations as well as non-perishable food items. Last year, the group collected 2,204 pounds of food, which was given to Community Action and distributed to area food pantries.

As Minot expands physically as a city and the city’s population grows, there are more residents looking for help, according to Mac McLeod, executive director of the Minot Area Homeless Coalition. The agency served 6,000 people in eight counties last year, and McLeod said those numbers will continue to grow. For the first time since he’s been director, McLeod said he has put people on a waiting list for services because of a lack of funds.

Freezin’ for a Reason, in its 11th year, won’t solve the city’s homelessness problem. But every contribution makes a difference, and the Student Social Work?Organization’s dedication to the event has no doubt increased area residents’ awareness of the problem. But the event is successful only because of the generosity of area residents, who contribute food items and money to the cause. We have every reason to believe that generosity will continue Saturday.
