UND women snap Gophers’ record win streak

MINNEAPOLIS – Sixty-three games ago, the University of North Dakota women’s hockey team defeated Minnesota. Since then, the Golden Gophers never lost.

That all changed Sunday afternoon at Ridder Arena when No. 4 UND knocked off top-ranked Minnesota 3-2.

North Dakota (9-2-1 overall, 7-2-1-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) snapped Minnesota’s (13-1-0, 11-1-0-0 WCHA) 62-game winning streak, having won previously on Feb. 17, 2012 at Ridder Arena.

UND freshmen Kayla Gardner, Gracen Hirschy and Susanna Tapani each scored, while goalkeeper Lexie Shaw posting a career-high 32 saves for her third win of the season.

The Gophers fell behind 3-0 before rallying for two second-period goals to cut the UND lead.

Shaw held off Minnesota in the third period, making 13 saves including four on the penalty kill.

UND hosts Wisconsin on Friday and Saturday.

Beavers split with North Dakota State

FARGO – The Minot State University women’s club hockey team scored the first three goals Sunday in a 5-2 victory against North Dakota State to split the weekend series with the Bison.

MSU freshman forward Ashley Blue scored short-handed and at even strength and classmate Sheyenne MacIver recorded a goal and an assist. The Bison (4-2) outshot the Beavers 37-27, but MSU sophomore goaltender Kayla Wakelin stopped 35 shots to earn the win.

NDSU’s Kacie Johnson scored both Bison goals on the power play.

The Beavers (3-3) dropped the opening game of the series Saturday in a 3-1 decision. Johnson tallied the first and last goals of the contest.

Blue tallied MSU’s lone goal at 11 minutes, 57 seconds of the first period.

The Beavers travel to play Rainy River Community College (Minn.) on Dec. 14.
