Shanley Deacons

Record: 29-2

Seed/How they got here: East Region No. 1; Beat Fargo Davies 3-1 in East Region championship

Coach: Curtis Johnson, third season

Past state championships: Two (1988, 1991)

Top players: Alivia Fraase, 6-foot, Jr., middle blocker, leads Shanley with 433 kills and 71 blocks and is second with 395 digs to notch all-East Region honors; Somer Bucholz, 5-7, Jr., middle blocker, an all-region selection, posted 253 kills; Sarah Jacobson, 5-7, So., outside hitter, has a team-best 399 digs.

Notes: Fraase has made a verbal commitment to play collegiately at University of North Dakota. The Deacons are 11-1 this year against Class A tournament teams, with the lone setback coming to Century in a 2-1 loss on Oct. 12. St. Mary’s is the only team Shanley lacks a win against. The two teams have yet to meet. The Deacons are 3-0 in five-set matches and 6-2 when dropping the first set.

Fargo Davies Eagles

Record: 24-8

Seed/How they got here: East Region No. 2; Beat Grand Forks Red River 3-1 in East Region semifinal, lost to Shanley 3-1 in championship

Coach: Melissa Wilson, first season

Past state championships: None

Top players: Katelyn Olson, 6-foot, Sr., setter, the East Region senior athlete of the year has 728 assists at a .299 clip, leads team with 87 blocks and 33 aces; Jaiden Langlie, 5-6, So., defensive specialist, all-region pick owns 253 digs; Kinsey Papacheck, 5-8, Sr., outside hitter, recorded team bests with 383 digs on the year and 2.19 kills per set.

Notes: The Eagles return to the state tournament for the second time in their school’s young history. Olson owns school records for assists in a match (46), a season (953) and a career (1,681 and counting). Davies went 6-7 against Class A tournament teams in the regular season.

Grand Forks Red River Roughriders

Record: 18-13

Seed/How they got here: East Region No. 3; Beat Valley City 3-0 in a state-qualifying match

First-round opponent: Jamestown, 2 p.m.

Coach: Carolyn Olson, 19th year

Past state championships: Eight (1992, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2009, 2011)

Top players: Mari Rustebakke, 5-7, So., setter, team’s only all-East Region selection; Elli Strand, 5-9, So., outside hitter, leads Red River with 203 kills; Keana Burr, 5-8, Jr., outside hitter, close second with 200 kills.

Notes: The Roughriders are making their 18th state tournament appearance during Olson’s 19-year tenure. Red River has a balanced attack, with five players notching more than 100 kills and eight with more than 100 digs. Rustebakke is the first sophomore to start at setter in Olson’s 5-1 offense. The Roughriders are 3-8 against tournament qualifiers.

Fargo South Bruins

Record: 20-13

Seed/How they got here: East Region No. 4; Beat West Fargo 3-1 in state-qualifying match

First-round opponent: St. Mary’s, 6 p.m.

Coach: Andrea Hummel, first year

Past state championships: Four (1990, 1997, 2002 (fall), 2007)

Top players: Emily Stroup, 6-foot, So., outside hitter, all-region performer boasts team-best 460 kills; Maddie Erickson, 5-7, So., outside hitter, also an all-region selection, second on team with 128 kills; Kaitlyn Anderson, Sr., setter, leads Bruins with 472 assists.

Notes: South rebounded from a 7-24 showing in 2012 to make the state tournament this year. Six players have notched at least 20 kills. The Bruins are 4-8 against tournament qualifiers, but have not played St. Mary’s.

St. Mary’s Saints

Record: 23-9

Seed/How they got here: West Region No. 1; Beat Jamestown 3-2 in West Region championship

First-round opponent: Fargo South, 6 p.m.

Coach: Amy Heuer, third year

Past state championships: None

Top players: Molly Roller, 5-10, Sr., outside hitter, all-West Region; Katelyn Schaffner, 5-11, Sr., outside hitter, all-West Region; Kaylyn Herold, 5-11, Sr., middle blocker, all-West Region; Allie Reisenauer, 5-6, Sr., setter, all-West Region.

Notes: Saints have won 12 of 13 matches, including past eight. St. Mary’s 11 seniors are most in tournament field. The Saints had never reached the region championship until last weekend. St. Mary’s is 6-8 against tournament qualifiers, but 6-1 in its past seven matches.

Jamestown Blue Jays

Record: 31-4

Seed/How they got here: West Region No. 2; Beat Bismarck High 3-1 in West Region semifinal, lost 3-2 to St. Mary’s in final

Coach: Sara Hegerle, third year

Top players: Josie Hegerle, 5-11, Sr., setter, the West Region senior athlete of the year, a first-team all-state selection last year, has team-leading 818 assists; McKayla Orr, 5-6, Sr., libero, an all-region pick and an all-stater in 2011, has 580 digs on season; Addie Eamon, 6-foot, Sr., middle blocker, all-region player leads Blue Jays with 383 kills and 71 blocks.

Notes: Sara Hegerle, Josie’s mother, played volleyball at University of Minnesota. She was named West Region coach of the year. The Blue Jays reeled off 24 straight wins before losing to St. Mary’s 3-2 in the region championship. Jamestown has won 33 of 43 sets against state qualifiers, with its only losses against North Dakota competition coming against Shanley and St. Mary’s.

Century Patriots

Record: 29-7

Notes: Bense and junior outside hitter Ali Hasche made the all-state tournament team last season. … Century beat first-round opponent Davies 2-1 in its season opener. … Shanley is the only East Region team to defeat the Patriots this year. Century beat each of the other three East Region state qualifiers. … The Patriots have winning streaks of nine and eight this season, but have lost three of their last five matches – two to St. Mary’s and one to Jamestown.

Bismarck High Demons

Top players: Natalee Todd, 5-8, Sr., middle blocker, notched team highs in kills (256) and blocks (54) to make the all-West Region team; McKenzie Kiefer, 5-7, Sr., setter, all-region performer leads team with 715 assists and is third with 210 digs; Morgan Miller, 5-8, Sr., outside hitter, was second-best Demon with 241 kills and 48.5 blocks to garner all-region honors.

Notes: The Demons have won four of their past five matches. Bismarck is the only team to take a set off Jamestown in two separate matches. The Demons are 3-11 against state tournament qualifiers.

Northern Cass Jaguars

Record: 30-6

Seed/How they got here: No. 1; defeated Central Cass 3-2 in Region 1 championship

First-round opponent: Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, 6 p.m.

Coach: Tom Klapp, third season

Past state championships: None.

Top players: Vanessa Johnson, 5-9, Sr., middle blocker, recorded team-high 16 kills in region championship and was named senior athlete of the year; Cassie Hilde, 6-0, Sr., middle blocker, the lone 6-footer on the roster creates issues for opposing hitters; Erin McDonald, 5-10, Jr., middle blocker, recorded 10 kills, two blocks and one ace against Central Cass.

Notes: This is the Jaguars’ first trip to the state tournament. … Northern Cass entered the Region 1 championship match 0-3 against Central Cass this season, losing two in straight sets. … The Jaguars enter the state tournament having won 12 of 13. … LaMoure is the only Class B state-qualifying team Northern Cass saw during the regular season. The teams split sets at the Valley City tournament in September and the Jaguars defeated LaMoure 2-1 at the Subway Classic in Lisbon in October.

Thompson Tommies

Record: 37-4

Notes: This is Thompson’s 11th state tournament appearance and first since the Tommies won their fourth title in 2008. … Thompson didn’t match up with any Class B state-qualifying teams this season. … The Tommies enter the tournament having won 15 straight and 25 of 26. Thompson posted 29 straight-set victories.

LaMoure Loboes

Record: 34-3

Top players: Courtney Carlson, 5-9, Sr., outside hitter, named District 5 senior athlete of the year. Abby Warcken, 5-3, Sr., libero; Anna Holen, 5-7, outside hitter, eighth-grader; Talitha Hirschkorn, 5-10, Sr., middle blocker. All four were named to the all-District 5 team.

Notes: This is LaMoure’s fifth state tournament appearance and first since 2007. … The Loboes sport a smaller roster than most teams in the tournament, but have talent throughout the lineup, from their six seniors to their two eighth-graders. … LaMoure didn’t play a single five-set match this season and played just four four-setters. … Matched up with Class B state-qualifying Carrington and Northern Cass during the season. The Loboes split two matches with Northern Cass and lost to Carrington.

Carrington Cardinals

Record: 29-7

Top players: Kayla Hochhalter, 5-11, Sr., outside hitter/middle blocker, leads team in digs (256) and aces (82) and is second in kills (321); Madison Wendel, 6-0, Sr., middle blocker, leads the Cardinals in kills (388) and blocks (103), and also recorded 72 aces and 174 digs; Brooke Rosenau, 5-7, Jr., setter, leads Carrington with 879 assists; Jacey Engelhorn, 5-6, Sr., outside hitter, recorded 232 kills, 203 digs and 71 aces.

Top players: Sydney Bentz, 5-11, Jr., middle blocker, the Coyotes’ lone all-region selection had 23 kills and six blocks in the Region 5 championship match; Autumn Alt, 5-11, So., middle blocker, finished second on the team in kills in each of their three region-tournament matches. Averaged 9.3 kills in those matches; Ashley Mutschelknaus, 5-3, Sr., setter, averaged 9.8 assists per set during the region tournament.

Notes: The Coyotes won their first District 9 title this season, but are making their second state tournament appearance. The other was in 2011. … Seven of 13 players on Grant County’s roster are seniors. … The Coyotes have won nine of their last 10 matches, with the only loss coming 3-0 to New England. … When the Loboes and Coyotes meet in today’s first round, it will be a matchup of the tournament’s only canine mascots.
