Davies edges MHS in boys hockey

Bryan Pallen scored a power-play goal with 18 seconds remaining Friday to send Fargo Davies to a 5-4 victory over Minot High at Maysa Arena.

Hayden Schwarz scored a pair of goals for Minot (0-1) – including one during a 5-on-3 advantage – to stake the Magicians a 4-2 lead with nearly six minutes remaining in the second period. But the Eagles rattled off two goals late in the second stanza, and the late game-winner, to claim the victory.

“Fargo Davies in the preseason coaches poll is No. 4 in the state and some people expect them to win the East Region, so we’re gonna take some positives out of it,” MHS coach Chad Burckhard said. “We made a lot of small mistakes, a lot of correctable mistakes. You never want to lose, but in this situation we’re only gonna get better.”

Easton Bennett and Taylor Elich also scored for Minot, and senior Quinn Fuchs tallied two assists. Breydan Effertz finished with 23 saves for MHS and Alex Kruger had 32 for Davies.

The Magicians host Grand Forks Central at 3:30 p.m. today.

Majettes rout Devils Lake

DEVILS LAKE – Eight different Minot High players scored, and the Majettes peppered Devils Lake goaltender Brianna Holtz with 72 shots in a 14-0 season-opening rout on Friday.

MHS senior Makaila Anderson recorded a hat trick in the second period alone and classmate Alaynee Thompson and freshman Mackinzy MacIver also netted three goals each.

“In a game like that, it can get pretty lopsided in the goals column, but I’m really proud of the girls,” MHS coach Weylin Wahlstrom said. “They moved the puck around the whole time, they continued to move their feet, and the defense kept the puck out of our zone. Overall, it was a good team win.”

MHS senior Sydney Swanson needed just three saves to complete the shutout. The Majettes play at Grand Forks at 2 p.m. today.
