Tauros blank Wings for sixth straight win

Defenseman Kyle Kruenegel scored twice for the Minot Minotauros, who shut out the Aberdeen Wings 4-0 Saturday at Maysa Arena for their sixth consecutive victory.

The Tauros (11-12-2) opened the scoring at 13 minutes, 41 seconds of the first period with a goal by forward Jake McCann. Scott Smoot scored with 1:23 left in the second period before Kruenegel scored two in the third frame.

Minot held a 33-17 edge in shots against the Wings (14-9-1), including an 11-2 margin in the second period.

The Tauros have opened an eight-point advantage over Brookings for the final playoff spot in the Central Division as the season nears the midway point.

Minot hosts Aberdeen again Friday at 8:05 p.m. at Maysa Arena.

North Dakota beats St. Lawrence 3-2

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Connor Gaarder had a goal and an assist as North Dakota beat St. Lawrence 3-2 Saturday in the final game of the Subway Holiday Classic.

Gaarder, who snapped a 28-game goal-less streak in Friday’s 5-2 loss, had a goal and assist in a 31-second span of the second period to give UND a 3-1 lead.

Rocco Grimaldi scored in the first period and Stephane Pattyn netted what proved to be the game-winner with 34 seconds left in the second period.

UND goalie Zane Gothberg had 25 saves, including two sprawling stops in the last five minutes.

UND (5-7-2) held the nation’s top power-play unit scoreless in three tries. The Saints (8-6-2) had three power-play goals Friday.

Gunnar Hughes and Greg Carey scored goals for St. Lawrence, which got 21 saves from Matt Weninger.
