Minotauros fall to Bobcats in shootout

The Minot Minotauros were unable to get the puck past Bismarck goaltender Aaron Nelson in overtime or the shootout and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Bobcats on Friday at Maysa Arena.

Bismarck’s Nate Repensky had the lone tally in the shootout as Minot (12-13-3) missed on its five attempts.

“We got a point, which we’ll take, but I think we can be better,” Minot coach Marty Murray said. “I thought our competitiveness got better as the game went on. I expected, at home, to come out a little bit hungrier.”

After a scoreless first period, Bismarck’s Huba Sekesi gave the Bobcats a one-goal lead at 2 minutes, 38 seconds of the second frame. Repensky was credited with the assist.

The Tauros answered back with their first goal of the game when forward Tanner Holmquist lit the lamp at 13:12 of the second period. Holmquist’s tally led to a flurry of teddy bears being thrown onto the ice as part of the Tauros’ annual “Teddy Bear Toss.” The teddy bears will be donated to the Domestic Crisis Center and the Minot police department.

Bismarck (17-7-2) reclaimed the lead in the final minutes of the second period when Tyler Dunagan scored the game’s lone power-play goal. The Bobcats outshot Minot 18-7 in the second stanza.

“When you give second and third chances to a team like Bismarck they’re going to make you pay,” Murray said. “Hopefully, tomorrow we can improve on some areas and have better results.”

Defenseman Jon Lizotte brought the Tauros even for the second time at 3:06 of the third, but that was the last puck Nelson allowed past him. Nelson finished with 25 saves.

Tauros goaltender Brandon Wildung finished with 37 stops and stuffed four of five attempts in the shootout.

The teams play in Bismarck tonight at 7:15.
