MOHALL Harvey Sundahl, 91, Mohall, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at a Mohall nursing home.
He was born Aug. 31, 1922, on the family homestead in Hamerly Township of Renville County. He was the last member born to original homesteaders Ludvig and Anna (Stormyr) Sundahl. He was raised on the family farm and attended the Hamerly Township School through the eighth grade. He was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Mohall, and attended Mohall High School.
Harvey joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served with the 2nd Marine Division in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1944 and returned to the family farm.
Harvey married Marjorie Johnson on Oct. 24, 1948, at Evanger Lutheran Church, rural Norma. His life was farming and he truly enjoyed all aspects of it. He farmed the family homestead until 1953, when he and Marjorie moved to their own farm in Hamlet Township, Renville County. In addition to farming, he also worked as a mechanic and a welder. He retired from farming in the early 1990s and entered the Good Samaritan Society nursing home in September 2011.
Harvey was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, the Farmers Union and National Farmers Organization. He received the Pioneer Award in 2004 from the Renville-Bottineau Agricultural Improvement Association.
Family: wife of 65 years, Marjorie Sundahl, Mohall; children, Gayle Sundahl, Portland, Ore., Steven Sundahl, Minot, Nancy Smart, Yakima, Wash., Susan (Curt Bahl) Sundahl, Mohall, Keven (Angie) Sundahl, Mohall, Lisa (David) O’Keeffe, Mohall; sons-in-law, Frank Whitecalfe, Garrison, and Don Aasen, Minot; grandchildren, Anne Smart, Mitchell and Macy Sundahl, Jessica and Jackie Whitecalfe, Heather (Sam) Nordick, Britta O’Keeffe, Levi (Lindsey Goulet) O’Keeffe, and Jared, Ben and Amanda Aasen; great-grandson, Jhett Nordick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, Juliane Whitecalfe and Lori Aasen; grandson, Marshall Sundahl; brothers, Olaf, Leonard and Norman Sundahl; and sister, Serine Haarsager.
Funeral: Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.
Burial: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.
Family Service: Today, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., at the church.
Visitation: Today, noon to 5 p.m., at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.
