Harold D. Jones

Harold Jones, 92, Kenmare, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Wyndmere, the son of Harry and Lillian Maude Jones. He was reared and educated in Wyndmere and graduated from Wyndmere High School, where Harold, known as “Hoddy,” was a very gifted and accomplished athlete.

Harold entered the Army on Nov. 10, 1942. He was stationed overseas with the 453rd Bomb Group and the 50th Signal Corps in Europe, where he installed, maintained and repaired telephone lines. He was awarded five battle stars, the Meritorious Award and the Silver Star. Harold was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1945.

After his discharge he returned to North Dakota and was united in marriage to Kathryn Freezon on Nov. 5, 1947, in Wyndmere. The couple owned and operated Hoddy’s Cafe in Wyndmere for a few years while Harold worked as a sheriff in Richland County. Harold went to work for the N.D. State Game and Fish Department as a game warden, living in Hillsboro and Valley City, and in 1963 they moved to Kenmare. Kathryn passed away in 2009.

Harold was a member of the Kenmare American Legion and in 1969 was inducted into the Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.

Survivors: son, Mike (Lee) Jones, Kenmare; daughter, DaNell (Dave) Albers, Minot; grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Melin and their children, Berklee and Bridger, Kenmare, and Eric (MacKenzie) Jones, Minot; sister, Helen Williams, Bonavista, Calif.; special niece, Cindi Kay (Bill) Larson, Minneapolis; and nephews, Jeff (Lorna) Nulph, of Clinton, Ark., and Scott Nulph, Laramie, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; sisters, Irma, Aurilla, Alta and Maxine; and brothers, Norman, Gordon, Percy and Lawrence.

Visitation: Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare.

Private services will be held at a later date.

A graveside service will be held in the spring of 2014 at Elk Creek Cemetery in Wyndmere.
