MHS places 2nd at Mandan

MANDAN – The Minot High boys swimming and diving team won three of five swimming events en route to a second-place finish Friday at the Mandan Pentathlon.

Century won the four-team field with 300 points, followed by the Magicians (284), Jamestown (176) and Mandan (122).

Senior Ethan Bahl took first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke with times of 22.88 seconds and 1:02.45, respectively. He also finished second in the 100 freestyle, 0.57 seconds behind Century’s Zach Grosz’s winning time of 49.71.

Freshman Gerald Brown recorded Minot’s other victory, taking home the 100 backstroke title in 57.70.

The Magicians compete Friday at Fargo North in a triangular with the Spartans and Century.

Magicians fall in shootout

ROSEAU, Minn. – Minot High junior goalkeeper Breydan Effertz stopped 28 of 29 shots in regulation and overtime, but the Magicians fell short Friday, dropping a 2-1 decision to Alexandria (Minn.) in a shootout in the semifinals of the Roseau Holiday Classic.

Effertz allowed an even-strength goal 6 minutes, 31 seconds into the contest, but Minot (6-4 overall, 5-1 West Region) fought evened the score in the next frame.

Senior forward Hayden Schwarz netted the equalizer at 3:54 of the second, with Jersey Kelly recording the assist.

But Alexandria outshot Minot 29-22 and – after a scoreless overtime period – came out on top in the shootout. Alexandria’s Sam Goetsch made 21 saves for the win.

The Magicians play today for third place.

Tauros fall 3-2 to Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Aberdeen scored two goals in the third period to beat the Minotauros 3-2 on Friday.

Michael Bigelbach and Colton Kramer scored unassisted goals in the second period to put Minot ahead 2-1, but Colin O’Neill and Bjorn Sigurdarson lit the lamp in the final frame for Aberdeen.

Minot’s Brandon Wildung stopped 32 of 35 shots, while Aberdeen’s Henry Dill made 33 saves to notch the win.

The two teams play again tonight at 7:35 in Aberdeen.

West Fargo drops Majettes 57-52

WEST FARGO – The Minot High girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and fell 57-52 to host West Fargo on Friday.

Juniors Sierra Duttenhefer and Sophie Bengson paced Minot (3-3 overall, 2-2 West Region) with 10 points apiece. West Fargo had three players in double figures, led by Shelby Gustafson’s game-high 13 points.

The Majettes made 21 of 53 shots – much better than the Packers’ 18-for-62 performance – but only knocked down one foul shot. West Fargo outscored Minot 16-1 at the charity stripe and recorded 14 more rebounds.

Minot is on the road again today with a 6 p.m. matchup against Grand Forks Red River.
