Top stories of 2013 – No. 9: Ili’s arrest makes national headlines

Former Minot State University football player Jesse Ili made statewide and national headlines in August when he was accused of attacking two Minot police officers during a traffic stop.

According to a police affidavit, Ili fled from a vehicle suspected of drug activity and fought with officers Erik Laudenschlager and Brandon Schmidt once they caught up to him. Ili overpowered Schmidt and repeatedly slammed his head into a retaining wall post, according to the affidavit.

Originally charged with attempted murder – a Class A felony – Ili later had his charges reduced to Class C felonies of aggravated assault, simple assault on a peace officer and preventing arrest or discharge of other duties. He also received misdemeanor charges of ingesting a controlled substance, refusing to halt, and possession of marijuana.

Ili pleaded not guilty to all six charges in October, and the case remains open.
