MSU noon luncheon set for today

The first Minot State University noon luncheon of 2014 will take place today at Seven’s Restaurant in the Vegas Motel.

As usual the luncheon series features an intro video, food and drink, insight from MSU players and coaches and recently added Beavers trivia.

The MSU men’s and women’s basketball teams are scheduled to appear at the luncheon before hosting Wayne State College at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively. Coach Sheila Green Gerding and players Katie Hardy and Diondra Denton will represent the women’s team and coach Matt Murken and athletes Chris East and Adam Randall will speak for the men’s team.

The luncheon is $9 per person and is open to the public.

Three MSU grapplers ranked

Three Minot State University wrestlers received votes in their respective weight classes in the most recent Division II Super Region Three rankings released Thursday.

Sophomore Ricard Avakovs (157 pounds), junior Marcus Polak (165) and senior Bobby Bartz (heavyweight) cracked the region rankings. Avakovs is ranked eighth, Polak sixth and Bartz fifth.

It marks the first time MSU has had three wrestlers ranked at the same time.

“All three guys are very deserving,” MSU coach Robin Ersland said in a press release. “They have worked very hard to get those rankings. Rankings are great for the fact that it gives people something to talk about but in the end, wrestling all comes down to how you do that weekend at the regional tournament. We are focusing on that and we’re focusing on getting a bit better each week.”

MSU wrestles in the University of Central Missouri Duals on Sunday, where it will spar with Baker University, UCM, Ouachita Baptist and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney.
