Thomas Edward Vest, 89, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Wesley Acres Health Center in Des Moines of heart failure.
Tom was born Dec. 3, 1924, in Quincy, Ill., the son of Louis and Ida (Blaesing) Vest. Tom proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945. He married the love of his life, Maurine J. Zeiger, on July 2, 1945, in Jerseyville, Ill. He began his retail management career at J.C. Penney Co. in Quincy, followed by promotions that took them to Minnesota and North Dakota. The family moved to Des Moines in 1967, where he enjoyed the opportunity to manage several companies including Helzberg Diamonds from which he retired in 1992. Tom and Maurine began ushering at the Civic Center in Des Moines in 1979 on a whim and it turned into an almost 30-year part-time job at the stage door for Tom, where he made many wonderful friends.
Tom loved baseball and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, attending spring training games in Florida, when he could. He was an avid bridge player, a “master griller” and looked forward to pheasant hunting each fall. Tom always had a smile and truly enjoyed interacting with people. If he made a promise he always kept it.
Tom will be lovingly remembered by: his three daughters, Nanette (Ivar) Jakobson, of Osage, Iowa, Cathryn (Bruce) Roberts, of Dunnellon, Fla., and Christine Newell, of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Mary Lou VerKoulen, of Evanston, Ill.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and 11 nieces, nephews and their families.
