MSU grapplers fall at Augustana

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Minot State University sophomore Ricards Avakovs (157 pounds) and senior Matt Fetterley (174) scored decisions in their matches, but it wasn’t enough as the Beavers dropped a 36-6 dual to Augustana on Sunday.

The Beavers (0-6 overall, 0-3 Northern Sun) were pinned three times, including the first match at 165 with Augustana’s Tim Weber taking down MSU senior Donovan Williams in 1:02. Fetterley’s 2-0 decision over Augustana’s Drake Fanslau brought the Beavers to within 6-3, but the Vikings (6-2, 2-0) reeled off 30 straight points with two more pins, four decisions and a forfeit at 125.

“The score does not reflect how much better we wrestled today than yesterday,” MSU coach Robin Ersland said in a press release. “We wrestled with better intensity and more purpose today. We lost some tough ones but the effort was better. We need to be more consistent to make the next step forward.”

Avakovs ended the dual with a 14-9 decision over Augustana’s Bradyn Neises.

The Beavers wrestle in the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Saturday. MSU will wrestle Chadron State (Neb.), Fort Hays State (Kan.), Newman University (Kan.) and Adams State (Colo.).
