Gary M. Volk

Gary M. Volk, 70, Minot, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, in a Minot hospital.

Gary was born March 17, 1943, in Harvey, the son of Steve and Agnes (Conrad) Volk. He attended St. Cecelia’s School in Harvey and in 1961 graduated from Harvey High School. After graduation, Gary attended Minot State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education. He continued his education at the University of Northern Colorado, earning his master’s degree in administration.

Gary entered the Army on June 15, 1966, and was stationed in Korea, where he served for 13 months. He was honorably discharged June 3, 1968.

He was united in marriage to Deb Hausauer on Aug. 31, 1974, in McClusky. They would have celebrated their 40th anniversary this summer.

Gary began his career teaching English in Mohall and McClusky. He later served as superintendent of schools in Buchanan, Souris, and Granville, where he retired for the first time in 2001. The family moved to Minot and Gary became the principal at St. Leo’s and Little Flower Catholic Schools. He retired again in 2011, but continued to substitute in the Minot area and worked as an adjunct professor at Minot State University.

Gary loved traveling. His favorite trips included visiting Alaska, Washington, D.C., the St. Lawrence Seaway, and most recently a trip to Rome.

Gary was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Minot, where he served on the parish council, Phi Delta Kappa International, Knights of Columbus, Harvey Veterans of Foreign Wars, Granville American Legion, and was a lifetime member of the North Dakota Association of School Administrators.

Survivors: wife, Deb, Minot; children, Cory (Anne), Bismarck, Eric, Anamoose, and Sara (Chris) Laite, Devils Lake; grandchildren, Alaina, Kaitlyn, and Noah Volk, Shae Ann and Camryn Volk, and Egan and Talia Laite; brothers, Bob (Gloriann) Volk, of Harvey, Don Volk, Atlantic, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Wilfred Dahly, Minot.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Agnes; sister, Geraldine Dahly; and sister-in-law Arlene Volk.

Memorials: Are preferred to St. John’s Building Project or Minot State University Summer Theater.

Mass of Christian Burial: Will be Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m., at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

Visitation: Friday, Jan. 24, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church.

Burial: Will take place Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at 11 a.m., at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
