Getting another chance

Minot State University introduced Todd Hoffner as its new head football coach on?Thursday, giving the former Minnesota State-Mankato coach a chance to restart his once-promising coaching career.

Hoffner’s last few years have been full of adversity, both personally and professionally. The Esmond native was charged with possession of child pornography in 2012 when officials found videos of his nude children on his work-issued cell phone. He was cleared three months later by a judge who ruled that the short videos of the children dancing were not pornography or illegal, rather just the silly antics of young children. Still, Minnesota State first reassigned Hoffner during the investigation and eventually fired him.

Minot State officials have done their homework in interviewing all the finalists for the job, including Hoffner. Following this week’s initial and necessary discussion of Hoffner’s case and exoneration, the focus going forward needs to be about football, because that’s why Hoffner was brought to Minot State.

He has winning experience at the Division II level. Hoffner compiled a 34-13 record at Mankato, winning three Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division titles (2008, 2009 and 2011). Minot State plays in the NSIC’s North Division. That winning tradition will follow Hoffner to Minot State.

During his on-campus interview, Hoffner said one of his goals is to “re-establish myself.” We’re glad he’s getting that opportunity at Minot State University. Welcome to Minot, coach.
