No. 3 St. Cloud State shuts out Beavers

For the third time this season – and the second in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition – the Minot State wrestling team failed to win a match.

The Beavers were pinned four times, lost one by technical fall, another by major decision and three others by decision in a 49-0 loss to No. 3 St. Cloud State (14-1 overall, 3-0 NSIC) on Friday at the MSU Dome.

MSU’s closest match came at 133 pounds as SCSU’s Zach Stewart edged junior Joshua Douglas 6-4. Douglas won the first four points via takedown and near fall, but Stewart scored two reversals and added penalty points and riding time to win the match.

“They killed us on the mat,” MSU coach Robin Ersland said in a press release. “We can’t get away because we don’t have anyone who can ride. You get better on the bottom when you have someone who can ride in practice and we don’t have that. The guys who need to get better aren’t getting better. Our guys think they are good on the bottom because the other guys can’t ride them.”

MSU sophomore Ricard Avakovs came close to picking up the Beavers’ first points, scoring a takedown and near fall against SCSU’s Clint Poster at 157. But Poster scored a reverse and pinned Avakovs in 2:20.

A.J. Patterson (125), Zachary Cummings (141) and Matt Fetterley (174) were also pinned.

“We didn’t quit, but this match wrestling stuff has been frustrating,” Ersland said. “We work on it all the time, but it isn’t carrying over and it’s not sinking in. Before we can make the next step as a program, we need to figure that out.”

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Beavers (1-10, 0-4), who wrestle No. 8 Upper Iowa tonight at 7 at the MSU Dome.
