James Mathiason

MOHALL James Edwin Mathiason, 74, Mohall, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at his home.

Jim was born Nov. 4, 1939, in St. John, to Edwin and Hazel (Roy) Mathiason. He was raised on a farm near St. John and graduated from St. John High School in 1955. He stayed at home for one year and then attended the State School of Forestry in Bottineau, where he earned an associate degree in business. He moved to Leeds prior to moving to Mohall.

He worked at Citizens State Bank, starting as a teller, and worked his way up to being the bank president.

Jim was once married to Marcella Holstein; they had five daughters. He married Susan (Melin) Ramsdell on Oct. 20, 1990, in Mohall. They continued living in Mohall, where he owned and operated Mathiason Realty.

Jim was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall, and served on the church council. He was an actively involved community leader. Spending time with his family was very important to him. He enjoyed attending sporting events and school activities of his children.

Family: wife, Susan Mathiason, Mohall; daughters, Michelle (Chad) Simonson, of Alexander, Mardelle (Barry) Buechler, of Harvey, Stephanie (Sam) Striegel, of Floyds Knobs, Ind., Jacqueline Mathiason, Bloomington, Minn., and Melanie (Allen) Hanson, Dassel, Minn.; stepchildren, Kristy (Dan) Leier, Minot, Carrie (Brad) Jacobson, West Fargo, and Aaron (BilliJo) Ramsdell, Bismarck; grandchildren, Sierra and Rope Simonson, Rachael and Andrea Buechler, Megan and Moriah Striegel, and Zada and Gavin Hanson; stepgrandchildren, Eric, Jacob, Matthew and Jenna Leier, Allison and Brayden Jacobson, and Hunter and Ayden Ramsdell; sister, Jean (Phil) Bonn, Rolla; brother, Doug (Bev) Mathiason, Lake Upsilon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Hazel Mathiason.

Funeral: Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, Mohall.

Interment: Mohall Community Cemetery, Mohall.

Family service: Today, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m., at the church.

Visitation: Today, noon to 5 p.m., at Brose Funeral Home, Mohall.

Memorials: Memorials are preferred to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Trinity Cancer Care Center, Minot.
