Cletus Schreiner, 81, Garrison, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, in a Bismarck hospital.
Cletus Arthur Schreiner was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Endres, to Nicholas J. and Aurelia (Ulrich) Schreiner. He was raised and educated in the Endres and Garrison areas. At the age of 12 he moved to the Cando/Leeds area to live with two uncles to help on their farm. Upon returning home he went to work for McLean Dairy, the Garrison Bakery, and started farming with his dad.
He enlisted in the Marines in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to farming and construction work.
On Oct. 30, 1955, he married Gertrude Schlenker at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison, where they continue to be members. They made their home in Garrison, where they raised their five children.
Cletus enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, cooking, Garrison Fire Department activities, playing cards and spending time with his family.
Cletus was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a trustee of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison for over 20 years, a member of the Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post 49, and has been active in the Garrison Fire Department since 1967, either as a firefighter or honorary member.
Cletus is survived by: wife, Gertrude, of 58 years; sons, Glenn (Candace), of Max, and his children Jenn (John) Dingmann and Ty and Molly of Plymouth, Minn., Angie (Jay) Roles and Tatum of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Nick, of Minot, Bruce (Sue), of Garrison, and children Jordan (Cassia) Rustad and Landon and Jaicee of Halliday, Jean (Scott) Graeber and Caylie and Kara of Bismarck; daughters, Becky (Charly) Kerzman, of Wheatland, Wyo., and children Jeb, of Wheatland, Wyo., Josh (Marianne) of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Lori (Darryl) Sayler, of Minot, and children Amy (TJ) Clouse and Blake, of Minot; Jake, of Max; Jodi (Brian) Bendickson, of Garrison, and children Chelsea, of Moorhead, Minn., Alex and Clay, of Garrison; brother, Don (Margie), of Garrison; sisters, Pat Schumaier, of Minot, Marguerite (Robert) Kroeplin, of Hillsboro, Ore., Jackie (Elmer) Flath, of Lakewood, Colo.; sister-in-law, Rosalee Schreiner, of Garrison; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Ellie) Schlenker, of Berthoud, Colo.; Art (Lois) Schlenker, of Anoka, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Virginia (Ted) Schock, of Grand Forks; Gladys Jamtgaard, of Wheatland, Wyo; Phyllis Duarte, of Carmichael, Calif.; and Linda Schlenker, of Hazen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cletus was preceded in death by his parents; father- and mother-in-law, Ruben and Hulda (Hummel) Schlenker; brothers, Glenn and Arnold; daughter-in-law, Paula; grandson, Jeremy Rustad; brothers-in-law, Ruben Schumaier, Joe Duarte, Whitey Jamtgaard, and Howard Schlenker.
Mass of Christian Burial and a Celebration of Cletus’ life: Will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison, on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at 10:30 a.m.
Burial: Will be in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery.
Rosary: Will be held at St. Nicholas Catholic Church on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m.
Visitation: Will be held on Wednesday, from noon to 6 p.m., at Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made the to North Dakota Firefighters Museum in Garrison or to the donor’s choice.
