Percussionists take stage Tuesday at MSU

Minot State University percussionists will present their Mid-Winter Concert Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Ann Nicole Nelson Hall. The Percussion Ensemble, Marimba Ensemble and soloists will perform.

On the program are works by classical composers including Haydn and Bizet, as well as contemporary compositions for percussion, according to Avis Veikley, percussion instructor.

Highlights are “Unity” for marimba ensemble by David Gillingham and “Ogoun Badagris” by Christopher Rouse for percussion ensemble, said Veikley.

“‘Unity’ is a beautiful, expressive meditation written to accompany the lighting of the unity candle in a wedding ceremony,” said Veikley. “On the opposite end of the spectrum, ‘Ogoun’ depicts a Voodoo ceremony and dance.”

Music majors Suzannah Miller, Mandan, and Jonah Wirginis, Saxonburg, Pa., will perform solos.

The program is free and open to the public. Parking on the MSU campus is unrestricted after 5 pm.
