Traffic stop leads to assault

A traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Devin Knutson, 23, Minot, turned into much more Sunday when he allegedly assaulted the officer after fleeing from the scene.

Knutson’s vehicle was stopped just after 10 p.m. by Officer Shane Johnson due to an outstanding bench warrant for failure to pay fines through the Minot Police Department. Knutson pulled his vehicle into the driveway of his own home in the 5000- block of Unity Drive before stepping out and allegedly announcing to Johnson that he both knew why he was being stopped and that he had a suspended driver license.

When Johnson told him he was under arrest, he allegedly fled before being stopped by Johnson on the steps outside his trailer. During a struggle, Johnson was allegedly struck and injured in the face.

Knutson is being held in the Ward County Jail and is charged with assault on a police officer, a Class C felony; escape and preventing arrest, both Class A misdemeanors; and driving under suspension, a Class B misdemeanor.
