Jean Martha Hale, Rugby, was born Monday, Aug. 9, 1920, and died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at the Heart of America Care Center, Rugby.
Jean was born to Leslie and Olive (Cull) Hale at Hamilton. She moved with her parents to Westhope in 1926. She attended Westhope schools and graduated as valedictorian from Westhope High School in 1938.
She was a telephone operator and clerk at the Red Owl grocery store in Westhope. She then attended Minot Business College, graduating in 1952. She moved to Rugby and worked as a bookkeeper for C&G, Inc. for 34 years, retiring in 1985.
Jean adopted her niece, Yvonne (Jeanne) Hale, at an early age. Together, Jean and her sister, Alma, raised Jeanne.
Jean was an avid crafter, always sewing, crocheting, cross-stitching and such. She enjoyed making many handmade afghans. Jean was an excellent baker. She was known for her homemade pastries and doughnuts.
Jean attended Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, Rugby.
Grateful for sharing her life are: her daughter, Jeanne Duchscher (Tim), of Parker, S.D.; two grandchildren, Cynthia Jean (Dave) Olsen, Woodridge, Ill., and Christopher (Joanna “Joey”) Duchscher, Santa Monica, Calif. She also leaves her sister, Alma, Rugby, and a brother, Bill, of Dallas, Ore., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Annabel Shelton; and brothers Harvey and Jack.
Funeral services: Will be held at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, Rugby, on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Nathan Steen officiating and Barbara Lee as pianist. The casket bearers will be Chris and Tim Duchscher, Gary Lee, Ross McDougall, Joe Mattern and Dave Olsen.
Visitation: Will be at the Niewoehner Funeral Home in Rugby on Friday, Feb. 28, from 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, an hour before the service, at the church.
Burial: Will be in the spring at Persilla Watts Cemetery in Rugby.
