Steve Knutson, 53, of Lignite, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.
Steven Terry Knutson was born in Mohall on May 23, 1960, to Terry and Marie (Krause) Knutson. He began school in Sherwood, and then moved to Bellingham, Wash., before returning to North Dakota and residing in Northgate. After graduating from Bowbells High School in 1978, Steve worked at the Bowbells Elevator, and then took a job as a dynamiter with a seismograph crew off the shores of Louisiana.
In 1979, Steve met Lisa Hermanson and shortly afterward began working at the Lignite Gas Plant. Steve married Lisa on Dec. 11, 1982, in Lignite, where they made their home and raised their daughter, Jade. Steve eventually became the manager at the gas plant and in 2007 he took the job of facilities manager with Whiting Oil and Gas. He worked at the Robinson Lake Facility near Stanley until the time of his death.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite and a first responder with the Portal Volunteer Ambulance.
Steven was widely regarded as kind, caring, and patient, with a skill for building close friendships that bridged generations. He was young at heart and had a rich sense of humor that he employed when least expected, invariably lightening the mood of those around him. Steve also had an endless passion for collecting classic cars. Always a loving father, Steve was a hero to his daughter. In recent years, Steve particularly enjoyed traveling with his wife and delighted in spending time with his pug, Mady.
Surviving family includes: wife, Lisa, of Lignite; daughter, Jade (Dave) Feldner, of Donnybrook; stepgrandchildren, Lane and Lee Feldner; siblings, Kermit (Deanna) Knutson, of Bowbells, Traver (Mary Sue) Knutson, of Minot, Gerry (Marsha) Knutson and Teresa (Jay) Hass, all of Bowbells, Jay (Monica) Knutson, of Portal, and DelRee (Tom) Rasmusson, of Kenmare; mother-in-law, Ermalee Hermanson, of Lignite; sisters-in-law, Jyl (Randy) Baumann, of Gillette, Wyo., Maia Hermanson and Lori (Mark) Hermanson-Germain, all of Orlando, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and three great-nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, John and Ella Krause; paternal grandparents, Ted and Inga Knutson; father-in-law, Keith Hermanson; nephew, Ashley Bakken; and sister-in-law, Shelli Hermanson.
Memorial service: Monday, March 3, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Christ Lutheran Church in Lignite.
Visitation: There will be no reviewal, but friends may sign the register book Monday, one hour prior to the service, at the church.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Ashley Bakken Memorial Endowment at North Dakota State University in Fargo.
