Beavers’ season ends in shutout

NEWARK, Del. – The Minot State men’s club hockey team’s goal of winning back-to-back championships ended Sunday with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Arizona State in the national quarterfinals.

The Sun Devils scored a goal in each period – two in the third – and limited the Beavers to 19 shots on goal.

ASU’s Troy Scott netted his team’s first goal of the contest with 1:50 remaining in the first period. Scott struck again in the late stages of the second period, giving the Sun Devils a 2-0 lead heading into the final intermission.

Dave Jantzie scored both third-period goals, the first coming with 13:07 remaining and the second, an empty-net goal, with one second left. Jantzie finished with two goals and two assists and Patrick Yudez recorded three assists.

“We unfortunately came up short tonight,” MSU coach Wade Regier said in a press release. “They showed why they are the best team in the nation. We were able to keep their top two lines off the score sheet but couldn’t create any offense. I am proud of the six seniors we lose, but know, with a ton coming back, we will be ready to make a run.”

MSU senior goaltender Wyatt Waselenchuk finished with 41 saves.

The Sun Devils advance to the semifinals, where they will play fifth-seeded Stony Brook (N.Y.) at 4 p.m.
