Abolish state income tax

Mike Schauer, Mandan

The budget forecast released by the state Office of Management and Budget is good news with all the revenue pouring in to the state. Tax collections in every area exceeded expectations and having close to $2 billion collected thus far this biennium shows how strong the economy is here in North Dakota. With that being said, it’s time for a little payback.

Abolish the state income tax. As Republicans, we all know government must practice fiscal responsibility and allow individuals to keep more of the money we earn. We have done that to some extent in cuts of personal and corporate tax rates. We also know the proper role of government is to provide only those critical functions which cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and the best government is one that governs the least. Where a state-owned marina fits into this is a little puzzling.

We all know that cutting or abolishing a tax will come back two-fold in tax revenue somewhere else, that is why sales tax collections are exceeding expectations.

Doing away with the income tax will do just that. You put a little more money back into the pockets of the people who earn it, they will spend it and more will be collected for the coffers. If we Republicans want to keep the super majority we currently enjoy, then someone within the ranks please put forth a bill to do this. If not, it is our responsibility as citizens to draft a bill and present it to the Legislative Council and get it on the agenda for the next legislative session. It would great if a bill came directly from the governor’s office and included in his next “State of the State” speech. If not, then I’m sure we could find some legislator who is willing to sponsor such a bill. It’s time people. Any time the government takes in more than it can spend, it’s pretty obvious we are overtaxed.
