Gerald ‘Jerry’ Nagel

Gerald “Jerry” Nagel (Wind Talker), 75, of New Town, died Friday, March 14, 2014, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT, Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall, Twin Buttes, with Pastor Elise Packineau officiating. Burial will follow at Red Butte Cemetery, Twin Buttes.

A wake service will be held at 5 p.m. CDT, Monday, March 17, at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall.

He was born April 5, 1938, to Geraldine Nagel-Vigil and Nathan Chase. Jerry was raised in Elbowoods by his grandparents, Jack and Sadie (Smith) Nagel. He attended school in Elbowoods until the flood, and graduated from Halliday High School. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Delaine (Sugar) Byington, and they had three children, Rose, Ann and Delbert. He farmed for 20 years with his grandpa Jack. During this time he also attended UND and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts. Jerry honorably served in the Marine Corps until 1961.

Jerry has had various jobs all over the country. His most memorable job was working for the governor’s office as a housing specialist. Jerry was CEO of the Tribal Council and served as the Twin Buttes Tribal Council representative for two terms. As well as a program specialist for the TAT, he also worked at FBCC as a small business specialist.

Left to cherish his memory are: his two daughters, Rose (Sidney) White Body, of Mandan, and Ann Solano, of Mandan; one brother, John Vigil, of California; sisters, Lillian Holen, of Twin Buttes, and Janis (Joe) Benson, of Mandan; four grandsons, Anthony (Charlie) Folden, John Nagel, Elias Nagel and Hector Solano; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Andie Folden, Isiah and Sid Nagel; and many relatives and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Delaine Byington Nagel; son, Delbert Nagel; parents, Geraldine Vigil and Nathan Chase; maternal grandparents, Jack and Sadie (Smith) Nagel; paternal grandparents, Alfred and Bell (Snow) Chase; great-grandmother, Mattie Many Roads Grinell.
