Ward County Sheriff Kukowski announces bid for re-election

Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski has announced that he will be a candidate for re-election this fall.

“Since serving as your Sheriff, there have been many accomplishments made and many more being planned. Serving as your sheriff I have the experience, track record and desire to continue working in that capacity to achieve our goals in our ever-expanding growth,” he said in a prepared statement.

He noted that calls for service are rising every year, and the county jail is at capacity. His office is working with other county officials and drafting plans to complete a jail expansion.

“Officer safety is also important and we have been able to and will continue to provide our staff with a range of modern, up-to-date equipment to enhance their performance. Together, we shall meet our current challenges and those of the next term to provide a safer environment for our citizens of Ward County,” he said.

Kukowski brought 36 years of law enforcement experience to the office when he was first elected in 2010. He has served in various local law enforcement capacities, including 10 years with the bomb squad and 10 years on the S.W.A.T. team. He had left the Ward County Sheriff’s office as a sergeant to join the Minot Police Department, where he spent a number of years and rose to captain of operations of patrol and detectives before his election as sheriff.
