United Way is cycling for a cause

The Minot Family YMCA was full of 55 cyclers broken up into separate teams of six to eight members Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to raise money for the Souris Valley United Way and its support for 29 different local programs.

In total, $2,555 was raised during the event.

“It was a really great turnout for a first-time event,” said Danielle Cook, the campaign coordinator for the organization, in an interview. “It was a really great day and we had a lot of fun things going on. A lot of people dressed up and showed their spirit and learned more about the United Way.”

In fact, the turnout was so great that Cook said they look forward to working with the YMCA again for a possible event next year, but they hope to secure a larger room so more cyclists can participate.

The money will go to the 2014-2015 budget, although their goal for that year won’t be announced until the summer.

“It’s great that we got a head start on it (the goal) with this event,” Cook said.

Town and Country Credit Union led the event with a total contribution of $570 with a team of six. Coldwell Banker raised about $485.

Prizes were awarded to groups and individuals for various categories.
