Helen Mildred McEvers was born Sept. 14, 1928, the middle of nine children to Abner Earl and Mildred Ardelle McEvers. Her early years were spent at country schools in Dale and Clayton Townships until the family started living in town during the school year and returning to the farmstead during the summers. She graduated from Lignite High School with the Class of 1946. In November 1940, their mother passed away and Helen and her siblings were left with Earl to raise the younger brothers and sisters. This created a bond in the family that has lasted forever.
She married Bill Bloom in 1946 and from this marriage they had three sons who died in infancy. They were blessed with the adoption of Jan and Barb. Bill was tragically killed in a car accident in 1959.
In 1961, Helen married Hans Nielsen and from this marriage Kirsten, Kari, and Kristopher were born. Hans passed away from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in 1973.
