Rovig commits to California juco
District 12 girls basketball senior athlete of the year Anika Rovig told The Minot Daily News on Monday evening that she has made an oral commitment to continue her hoops career at Cuesta College, a junior college located in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The 5-foot-10 Bishop Ryan guard won the final 57 games of her career, including back-to-back state titles. In 2013, she garnered Class B second-team all-state honors.
Rovig chose the California school over Division II University of Mary, along with jucos Williston State, Dickinson State and Bismarck State.
“I went on a visit right before districts and I instantly fell in love with it when I got off the plane,” Rovig said. “It seemed perfect.”
An all-Region 6 honoree, Rovig averaged 8.4 points, 5.9 assists and 2.6 steals per game in 2013-14. She said Cuesta was a favorable option because of her ability to play right away. She would’ve been a likely redshirt candidate at U-Mary. Rovig’s end goal is to eventually play at a Division I program.
“Coach (Ron Barba) is really known for placing his players at the right schools at the end of their two years,” Rovig said.
