Darrell Wayne Guenther, 78, Minot, died April 14, 2014, at his residence in Minot.
Darrell was born in Dunn Center, Dunn County, on Jan. 29, 1936, a son of Ben A. and Velma (Menge) Guenther. He graduated from Beulah High School in Beulah in 1954. He entered the Navy in 1955 and served for four years, and was honorably discharged in 1959. He returned to Beulah and worked at the MDU power plant there and farmed his widowed sister Margy’s farm.
In 1961, he married Joan Freeman, a new teacher in Beulah. They moved to West Fargo, where he was a brand inspector. They lived in Bismarck for a short time before moving to Minot in 1963, where he worked for Mon-Dak Chemical before owning his own Gulf Oil station and later D and E Oil and later managing the auto center at JC Penny’s for three years.
Darrell then started over-the-road driving for Farstad Oil and Werner Enterprises until his retirement. In his retirement he drove for Northland Bus, driving for sporting events, school and tours. The highlight of his retirement was serving in the KHRT Horn of Plenty Ministry and teaching a Bible study in church.
Darrell was a member of First Baptist Church, Minot, where he was an usher and was a member of the XYZ group. He was a 30-year member of the Kiwanis, serving as vice president, president and lieutenant governor.
Darrell will always be remembered by his humor, faithfulness, and love.
Darrell is survived by: his wife, Joan, Minot; son, Daniel Wayne (Jennifer) Guenther, Big Sky, Mont., daughter, Heidi Lynn Helseth; three grandchildren, Brittany and Vance Zuck, Will Guenther; one great-granddaughter, Lilliana Grace; sister, Margy Zich, Bismarck; sister-in-law, Clarice Guenther, Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Jesse (Kay) Freeman, of Henderson, Nev., Mike (Leslie) Freeman, Anacortes, Wash.; and sister-in-law, Dianne Towner, East Haven, Conn.; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben A. and Velma Guenther; brothers, Milton (Ella) Guenther, Ronald (Anne) Guenther and Wesley Guenther; sisters, Ione (Truman) Ferebee and Ina (George) Ferebee; brothers-in-law, Pat O’Neil and Joseph Zich; and sister-in-law, Shirlie (Dr.Stu) Ramsdell.
Funeral: Will be on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Minot.
Visitation: Will be on Monday, April 21, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Burial: Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.
