Postovit’s ‘Trip Around the World’ at Taube
“A Trip Around the World,” featuring works from Grand Forks native John Postovit, will be on display from May 6 through June 6.
The title of the show tells the topic, but not the style. Postovit works primarily in charcoal and chalk pastels, using unique methods that produce large drawings with unusually intense colors. “Augmented reality” might be the most concise description for these drawings, which are quite realistic but often hide unexpected elements.
“Throughout my years as a working artist, I have preferred to change themes frequently, both to suit my wide variety of interests, and to meet the needs of producing internally consistent exhibitions,” Postovit said. “But the theme I return to, again and again, in various guises, is travel. Throughout my life, I’ve been a frequent traveler throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia. Five of my 44 solo shows have been on the theme of travel. My ‘A Trip Around the World’ exhibition includes drawings from all the locales I have visited. But the majority of inspiration for this show comes from trips to Italy, England, Bulgaria, Thailand and Australia.”
Postovit was born in Grand Forks in 1962, and raised in Bismarck and Fargo. He graduated from the University of North Dakota. Since then, he has lived in numerous locations including Europe. He currently lives in California, where he draws, paints, and teaches math and physics.
