Thomas Vera Sr.
Thomas David Vera Sr., 69, Minot, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014, in Minneapolis.
Thomas was born on July 5, 1944, in Oakland, Calif., the son of Joseph Vera and Vera Anita Alvarez. He joined the Navy on Feb. 17, 1964, and served in the Vietnam War. Thomas then went on to serve in Naval Public Works as a master plumber in San Diego. During this time he traveled to the Philippines, Alaska, and across the United States. After 35 years he retired and moved to Minot to be closer to his grandchildren.
Thomas quickly became an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Minot Norsk Hstfest. Everyone who met him enjoyed his company and he had a knack to instant make friends. He was affectionately known as “Pops” to his friends. He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and VFW. His passions were fishing, golfing and hunting with family and friends. He enjoyed living life and traveling. He had a hearty laugh that made everyone smile. The highlight of his day was seeing his grandchildren or fishing with his close friends.
Survivors include: his sons, Christopher M. Vera and Thomas D. Vera II; grandchildren, Thomas D. Vera III and Christopher M. Vera.
Thomas was preceded in death by his sister, Pamela Rivera.
A memorial service will be conducted: today, Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Minot.
Friends may sign a register: one hour prior to the service at the church.
He will be deeply missed.
