Pioneer Village opening
The Ward County Historical Society will celebrate its opening for the spring season from 11. a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday with activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
There will be a barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the museum, followed by a tea in memory of the late Arlene Saugstad from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will also be music. The event is free and open to the public, though a free will offering will be accepted.
Dan Caswell, president of the Magic City Antique Car Club, said there will be a classic car show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the north side of the museum grounds. Everyone with a classic car is encouraged to bring the car to show them off that day.
“”We’re going to have real old cars that people can touch and see,” said Caswell, who said people are sometimes discouraged from touching the antiques at other car shows.
If the weather permits, the members of the car club will also give people rides in the old cars.
“That’s the best way to get people excited about old cars,” said Caswell. “Let people sit in them and ride in them and touch them.”
Caswell said he enjoys seeing the way people react to the old cars that are on display. Young kids who see the cars have often never seen a hand-cranked window and are fascinated by them and want to try them out. Their parents and grandparents enjoy seeing the old cars again and they bring back fond memories for them.
The Magic City Antique Car Club is now in charge of a rotating antique car display on the museum grounds.
Caswell said the club wants to switch the cars out every month, focusing on different eras. During the first month, they will focus on horse-drawn equipment such as buggies, covered wagons and sleighs.
“We want to try to take it up to the modern era,” said Caswell, which would go up to about 1990.
Caswell said the car club is also looking for classic car owners willing to loan the museum their cars for a month to put on display. The cars will be well-cared for and on display in a building. Caswell said the cars should be insured, which is commonly done anyway by car collectors. People who are interested should call Caswell at 701-721-3617 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org
Other events are planned throughout the summer. The museum will host “Arts in the Parks” on the evening of July 3. The museum will be open for visiting during the State Fair.
The museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on Sundays by appointment. Call 839-0785 for more information about tours.
