James F. Herman

James Francis Herman, 78, Bowbells, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at a Minot hospital.

Jim was born on July 27, 1935, in Olney, Ill., the son of J.A. and Bertha (Kuhl) Herman. He lived on a farm but attended school in Olney, where he graduated in 1953. James moved to North Dakota in 1954, where he was employed as an oilfield worker, and in 1955 moved to Burke County. James married Hazel Regan on Sept. 7, 1957. The couple moved to Bowbells in 1961, where they raised their five children.

Jim was a member and past officer of the Bowbells Volunteer Fire Department, the Bowbells Summer Recreation Board, the Bowbells Park Board and the Burke County Fair Board. He always supported and helped with programs that involved children. Jim spent many hours fencing the ball park, building sand boxes, fixing swings or whatever needed to be done at the Bowbells City Park. The Burke County Fair was special to him, and the kids that brought rabbits, chickens or lambs had lots of help and praise from him.

Jim’s favorite saying was “cheese and crackers” and he said it often to family and friends as he was teaching them to fish, hunt or play cards.

Jim was active with the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, serving as a council member, leading rosaries and taking care of the yard. He was also an officer and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

In retirement, Jim’s hobbies were baking cookies for the residents on card-playing day at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Kenmare and for the 4-H kids that helped with the recycling project and on cold days he’d make hot cocoa to have with their fresh cookies. Jim also loved his garden and grapevines. He spent many hours tending to them throughout the spring and summer, canning and freezing and making grape jam in the fall and winter. Most of his efforts were given away to be enjoyed by his family and friends. Bird watching became a special passion for Jim and he enjoyed spotting the different birds that came to the numerous feeders he had in his yard.
