School board approves architect

The Minot Public School Board approved an architect and a construction manager at risk for upcoming school construction projects during a board meeting Monday.

JLG Architects of Minot will serve as the architects for construction of new additions at Edison and Perkett elementaries and Kraus-Anderson Construction will serve as the construction manager at risk for those projects as well as for construction of a new elementary in southeast Minot and safety and security improvements at Minot schools. AWW Architects and DLR Group are the architects for the new elementary school and safety improvements at all the schools.

Voters approved a $39.5 million bond issue in April that will pay for the new school construction.

Also at their Monday board meeting, board members approved a price hike for school lunches for the 2014-2015 school year.

Lunch prices for elementary students will go to $2.05 per meal, up from $1.95 per meal this this school year. Middle school and high school lunches will rise from $2.15 this school year to $2.25 per meal in 2014-2015. School breakfast prices and adult lunch prices will remain the same as last year. The price hikes are being required by the federal government, according to food service director Ivy Thorson.

The school board also approved six early dismissal dates for the 2014-2015 school year. School will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. on those dates so that teachers can take professional develoment training. The dates are Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Dec. 10, March 18 and May 13. Assistant superintendent Kim Slotsve said she received one phone call this year from a parent concerned about transportation on early dismissal dates. The district’s after school program has made adjustments to provide care during early dismissals, according to the school boards. School let out early eight tmes this year so teachers could take professional development.
